If I bought a blackberry pearl, would I HAVE to also buy the blackberry service?

I know with some phones, like the Blackberry, you have to buy the extra internet service, or whatever.
But- could I just buy the Blackberry Pearl and just use it as a phone on the Verizon network?

    I have one, too. I just stuck my sim card in and it works! just some of the features don’t….no big deal!

    My Blackberry Pearl is a really cool gadget and I got a fantastic deal when I purchased it.

    There is a good review about the Blackberry Pearl over at this site.
    I would visit it.

    the answer is ‘maybe’.
    if you plan on buying the phone without verizon subsidizing the cost, then you can put it on any plan you want. if you want a discount on the phone when youre signing a new contract, then you must put it on the plan they require. if they require a data plan, you have to get it.
